Although bleeding the brake system is a very important part of yor vehicle's upkeep, it is not necessary to bleed every time you do a pad slap. In your own way, all of you are correct. It is possible to compress the calipers without opening the master cylinder cap, but this pressurizes the master cylinder which can make compression of the caliper piston more difficult. I usually losen the cap and put a clean "just-in-case" rag over the top of the cylinder. With most cars, if you perform the brake job on a level surface there will not be much fluid leak out, if any- since the master cylinder is not supposed to be completely filled. It all depends on 1. how much fluid is in the resovoir and 2. how thin the pads are. (If the pads are really thin, the pistons will need to travel more to gain clearance for the new pads and rotors. All in all, there is a lot of useful information on this thread. None is really incorrect, just some are better ways to approach the job than others.

What's even more important, is to completely flush the brake fluid as a periodic maintenance. I like to do this every 30k, but most maint schedule will call for a brake fluid flush every 60k. If at all.

That's beacuse it isn't necessarily a step, unless someone fills the reservoir when the pads are low. Most of the time, the fluid won't overflow, again, unless someone has refilled it when the pads are low. Dude, believe me, when it comes to brakes, I DO know what I am doing. I am ASE brake certified, and brakes have always been my "speciality" in the shops I worked at.

Who's fighting. Actually, I totally agree. You should get the manual! BUY one! That way, you will have reference material whenever you need it.

I even still use a manual. I have had a manual for every car I ever owned. The manual is your friend!
