Default tranny flush

i got a 99 v6 5spd with 74k miles.

i can tell the tranny fluid needs to be flushed b/c when i shift the tranny thunks like i hit a bump in the road.

anyways, has anyone had it done and how much does it cost? also what tranny fluid should i use (besides OEM)?

thanks.

I always recommend synthetic fluid now. And you are right on the threshold of NOT doing the flush. UNLESS it has been done before. The reason is, if the original fluid has been in this long, and you flush it, crud will still be in there, only its gonna be in more of a solid form. And after the flush, it will break loose, causing leaks at the input and output shafts, and possibly cause damage to the clutches inside. I had mine done at 40k, and with the synthetic fluid, it cost me about $80.00. But that was a flush without doing the filter. If you do it early enough, you don't need to do a filter the first time. I've done over 200 tranny services, and I have seen the leaks occour after doing it after 70-75,000 miles without it being done before. Most maint secheules call for it being done at 60,000mi intervals, if at all. Dodge claims you need never service thier auto trannys ever. Or at least they used to. But that is pure CrAzY! IMO.

well i bought it used and i wont be able to find out if it was done before.
the tranny sounds like its begging for new fluid.
should i risk it....?
if i leave it without a flush wouldnt it be more harmful?

Like I said, you are on the threshold. Do it. And use synthetic fluid.

like dodges autos arent a peice of sh*t already

i havent had mine done because when it went in for the 50k they said that the fluid was fine, i will probably get it done at 55k when it goes in even if it is fine though.

YES! Yours is well within what I call the Danger Zone. You should have the fluid flushed and the filter changed. It's gonna cost you, cus you should have the tranny flushed FIRST, then the filter changed. I say this cus about 40% of the fluid is in the torque converter, and our torque converters do NOT have a drain plug. THEN after the flush, the pan needs to come off to replace the filter.
