How about this- Something with high torque and low horsepower: A farm tractor. Something with high horsepower and low torque: A Jet Engine.

Well it looks as if this topic has been burried in the ground, but here's one more peice of food for thought for you guys. I have a 98 V6 mustang with my mods in my sig, well the big ones anyways, and I have less hp than my buddies 00 stock V6 stang and I can beat him in a race. Now he's never been on the dyno, but comparing him to other people, he should have about 160 rwhp, with about 190-2-- lbs of torqe, although Ford claims 220 torque. My car dynoed at 125.4 rwhp with 230lbs of torque, although because the tachomter wasn't working right due to my 9mm wires, it was an approximate calculation, but he said at worst I have about 225lbs or torque. See, I have less hp, but more torque, wich allows me to have a little better off the line time, although my tuner helps a little there, and I always beat him by about half a second in the 0-60 run, but the quarter always comes out a little closer because of my lack of hp, but I still own his *** on top speed as I am well capable of breaking 125, and maybe 130 mph, and he's restricted to about 118. Point is, torque is much more important to accelleration then most people assosiate it with.
