auto shifter

RE: auto shifter
Steptronic, sportshift etc, they're still auto trannies...i.e. they still have the same parasitic drivetrain loss as standard auto. You are just telling the computer when to shift, no shifting gears manually. The only real advantage to these slapsticks is that if you time it right, you can shift higher then reg. auto would at full throttle. Its a manual automatic.
DSG trannies like the new GTI or MR2 Spyder are a bit different, as they don't have the normal auto parasitic drivetrain loss, but they are still auto because you are still telling a computer when to shift. More of an automatic manual, but still automatic
That said, i had a slapstick in my RSX, and it is a fun little deversion when driving, just don't think it will be any faster then reg auto. That said i do wish they put it on the Mustang, because straigh auto can be mind numbing, but i guess it didn't go with the retro feel or something.

RE: auto shifter
yep jericho is right on, BUT i have to disagree about being any faster,WITH a tune, yes it wont be any faster, but on a stock car, you will be faster because you can go further and maintain the engine in the peak power band. Unless it auto shifts for you, which is gay. the g35 i drove didnt shift for you except out of first, when it would shift if you wound it out. but every other gear you could hold it on the redline and 0-60 was faster than straight auto (timed it lol) i had fun in that car.......

RE: auto shifter
If you time your shifts perfect, accounting for the delay, you can shift over redline right before fuel cutoff, at least on the RSX I could i know some cars will shift for you if you get near redline and haven't shifted, so yes then it is a bit faster, because even at full throttle a stock auto will shift a few grand before redline.

RE: auto shifter
exactly thats what i was saying! cool man. yeah ford def shoulda done that. if they were really going super retro (enough to not put that in the car for that reason) then they wouldnt have put that HUGE hummer looking shifter in the autos. lol. i thinkit has to do with price. that sucks

RE: auto shifter
I installed a HURST DUAL GATE shifter in a 79 TRANS AM that I owned in the late seventies. You could do conventional automatic, or open the "gate" and go into the manual shift side, ratcheting from one through three. It was fun and pretty to look at with the HURST T-HANDLE installed.
I don't know if I would do the same mod to my 05. I have too many other projects in mind.

RE: auto shifter
If it wasn't for the fact I haven't drove manual in years and didn't want to try to re-learn on a new car, I would've gotten a stick shift and put in a "Rat Fink" style stifter. Maybe even cut a hole in the roof to do it...
