RE: Beater cars
Daily driver mustang here, but I liveabout 5miles from where I work. The best part of my day is when I am getting off work, knowing I get to drive home. Some days it takes me 20 min to go that5 miles, other days it takes me about8ish minutes (if the lights are nice)... depends on how I feel.

RE: Beater cars
I have several beaters actually. My DD is a 94 probe GT with suspension mods (dropped 2"), then I have my 93 ranger but thats a 5.0L with an AOD, then I also have a 97 saturn SL2. But really theyre not beaters, theyre all in pretty good shape except for the saturn which needs a motor, as soon as the weather gets above 30* its in there.

I have a beater truck, but just for winter. I bought it for $1. My grandfather purchased it new in 1982. It is a Chevy C10 Custom Deluxe with 75,000 original miles. I don't know what is deluxe on it since it has no options (2wd, straight 6 cyl, three on the tree manual trans, vinyl seats). It doesn't even have a cigarette lighter which was an option back then. With the 3 on the tree it is kind of fun to drive and I really appreciate the Mustang when I switch back.
I still drive the Mustang in winter when the roads are clean. If it weren't for winter, I don't think it makes any sense to get a beater. Your car payments are same and I would be willing to bet the extra insurance and vehicle registration (not to mention cost of buying and maintaining/repairing a beater) more than outweight the additional depreciation from mileage.
