Default dropin w/ tune or CAI w/ tune?

I know that the CAI is better, but how much better, is it worth the money or does the drop in perform well?

Significantly better -- the stock airbox lid is pretty restrictive, and a good chunk of the gain from going CAI is from replacing that piece. You can get an ebay CAI for about the same price as a drop-in, too, and it's much shinier!

In truth, not that much, considering a CAI's really only worth around 7-8hp, which is in itself not much. The big advantage you'll see over a drop-in is throttle response --it's much snappier witha CAI, which translates into way more fun driving around. Should be good for an extra mpg over the drop-in, too

What I'd like to see is someone debaffle and port the stock lid with a dremel, cut out the bottom of the airbox to get more cold air, and add a drop-in filter, and compare THAT to a CAI.

Actually (rereading your post), with a take-off muffler, the gap between CAI and drop-in would widen more. I still say grab the ebay CAI, you won't regret it!

I've had both and believe me a drop in with a tune isn't much different than a CAI and tune. If you ever plan to go FI don't buy a CAI, you'll end up having tosell it. As a matter of fact look in the classified section here and at the collective and I'm sure you'll find several used ones for sale.
