This may sound like a dumb question but...wouldn't a laser jammer be...illegal? Just curious, as that may make it more difficult to find.

Laser jammers are illegal to operate in the states of: Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado and Washington DC.
Radar jammers are illegal to own and/or operate in all 50 states per the Federal Communications Commission.
Radar detectors are also illegal in commercial vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds in all fifty states, per Title 49 Transportation Act.

No to Cobra radar?
they are okay, i prefer the v-1 personally, and it also tells you where the po po is, which is awesome. i have a beltronics vector 995, which is made by the same company who makes radar guns for the cops so i feel confident in it. Haven't been pulled over so far. lucky me.
Personally I like the Bel Pro (http://www.beltronics.com/pro-series.html). The Valentine is good, but I saw this review, http://www.radartest.com/article.asp?articleid=9090, and decided to go with it. Very happy - has saved me a bunch of tickets. So go with the Bel Pro, or even the Escort 9500i if you want some cool GPS features.

And to whoever asked about whether or not the radar detector was legal in MI, I believe the only state it's illegal in is VA.

The thing is , is that sometimes it seems that the police are just ticket happy . What's the end result ? a money collection. You could be the best driver with a perfect record minding your own business and just happen to forget yourself for a few seconds and there's a police aiming a stupid radar or laser gun at you because you crept over the speed limit by a certain margain . Then you have to take time of work and go to court and pay the state money .It's one thing if your really speeding by a lot or driving like a maniac but the majority of tickets are given to people who are not really speeding or doing anything that wrong and I think mainly because a lot of speed limits are underposted . Small residential streets are one thing but there are many roads where speed limits feel so slow and artificial that when you go a little over and it just feels right they call it speeding . The thing is do the police ever make mistakes ? or are they perfect . Here in maryland for the most part the police don't go the speed limit .Sometimes there just cruising and there doing at least 15 over .I wonder why ,maybe because it just feels right . And there just following along with the traffic flow or other people are keeping up to his pace . Where's his ticket ?

Hey everyone, I'm new here! I just wanted to jump right in and say that I bought an Escort 9500i a couple months ago and think it works great! Excellent range front and back, plenty of advance warning, and of course the TrueLock GPS feature. I haven't had this thing very long, but can already tell you that it's the best detector I've ever owned. To the OP who was thinking about buying an RD, definitely check this one out!
