performance after dual conversion?
Hi, I was wondering if any could tell me how the v6 performs after a dual conversion. Preferably a Y pipe, which is what i plan on getting. But I mainly wanted to know how the car will be running differently, and if it might affect the engine or anything else in a negative way. Thanks.
I think that unless you use an "X" or "H" pipe you will not see much change in performance. In fact I have read that a single free flow muffler is about as good as adding duals to the V6 but I could be wrong. I added a single GT take-off and am in no hurry to go to full duals.
Okay. theres not really much point of putting twoY pipes on the car. the point is it still restricts it down to a single 2.5" pipe. DylanFan is right, you will probably see about the same performance as just going to a freer flowing muffler. TRUE duals is the way to go as far as performance, especially if you want to take it deep into modifications. iveinstalled the Pypes catback true duals on my car about a week and a half ago, and since i put them on there (the pypes system you can do out of your garage with just a couple tools and a shopjack/jackstands) the performance has been noticable, much more top-end go. i love it. but honestly, there isnt any point of going with twoY pipes, it really defeats the purpose.
I went with the y pipe because of it's bolt on ease of installation and since I am probably going to leave the car basically stock. It only narrows down to to a single pipe between the 2 Ys only for maybe a foot or less which is fine with me because I have heard that a too free flowing exhaust on the v6 may hurt low end torque which I did not want .I think it sounds and feels a little less restrictive than the stock v6 single pipe

I've had both systems on my car. First a MAC reverse "Y" setup, then a Pypes "X".
The reverse "Y" is more than fine for a stock or lightly modded 4.0 (CAI, Tune, etc). An "X" or "H" setup really comes into play when you've gone a bit further (like a supercharger or turbo).
The true dual type setups do tend to sound a bit better tho', something you might consider whatever your performance goals.
I've heard SOHCman's setup in person. As good as that clip sounds, it's even better in real life....

Your exhaust does sound great, btw...

I heard sounds clips of JBA's H pipe and Y pipe set up, and concluded that the sound difference wasn't enough to go with the H. Since I always intend on installing everything on my car, I prefered cutting one pipe instead of three, thus making the Y pipe more favorable. I have also heard about too free flowing exhausts on out 4.0 losing torque, which I didn't want either. After I got JBA's new full stainless Y duals, it is louder than their single axle back, and I feels less restrictive when heavy on the throttle as well.
Just remember to reset the ECU after the exhaust install. (And if you have an X-Cal2, doesn't hurt to reload your tune again!)
I have the Pypes true duals X-pipe setup.. Feels like you lose some power in low RPM's but it feels like it climbs RPMs faster then before.. Not to mention the sound adds 10hp :P

I'd like to echo this as well.
