Default Problem at Idle

Hi folks so here is the problem I am having.

1) At idle I hear a tap tap tap tap tap (or maybe a click click click click) sound sometimes when the car starts up and the idle goes down to 750 (meaning it is warmed up enough not to be idling high). It will continue to do this at idle until I've driven for 5 or 10 minutes and then it seems to quiet down. Any ideas?

2) Sometimes when I press in the clutch coming to a stop the car seems to almost die, then it catches. The two problems seem to occur at the same time.

Also the defroster is not on so it isn't the A/C clutch, and usually the clutch is depressed and the car is out of gear so it doesn't seem like it could be the transmission. I would like to take it to Ford but I HATE my dealership so I'd like to have an idea before I take it to them and they say they can't recreate the problem.

Thanks for any help!!

Well laserred02, number 2 sounds like a possible idle air control valve sticking. Im not sure I have ever heard one making a tapping or clicking noise. Sounds like this might be one of those problems that might take a while to find. When your car is making this noise, raise the hood and see if you can narrow down where the noise might be coming from. Most people dont have a stethoscope but ill let you in on one of my little tricks.Do you have a siphon hose? About a 6 foot piece of waterhose would do the job as well. Take one end of the hose and put it to your ear then start placing the other end around things you think the sound might be coming from. If you put the hose over whatever is making the sound it will magnify it just like a stethascope.

Default RE: Problem at Idle

thanks for the suggestion wickerbill, I found a tsb that describes metallic clicking sound coming from the dash at idle that was from 05-06 mustangs. It was a problem with the exhaust hanger on the transmission. So I may bring this to Ford and even though I have an 07 have them check that. Also the two problems may not be related, maybe I just notice them at the same time.

Anyways thanks for the help, and anyone else with ideas please post them.

I actually had a Ford Escort GT which had known idle air controller problems... anyway, I had one go out and it would click at startup also. (it is a very mild click, almost sounds like a spark plug wire snapping)

Item#2,i have same problem(an 07 also). It actually went away for awhile, then came back.Where is this idler air control valve?Somewhere on the throttlebody?Bumping the idle speed up just a bit has helped tho for now.I have plans to get the zabtech throttle body which hopefully will resolve this along with a performance improvement.

yeah usually the idle air control valve is around the throttle bodies, ive not looked to see where it is on our cars. Its a metering valve with a spring behind it that moves in and out in a twisting motion. You can remove the valve and leave the wire hooked up, turn on the swith and watch it to see if it is working smootly. If you attempt to remove and check it though watch out because it will extend out enough for the spring and valve to fly across the shop like one did to me the other day.
