The ONLY way to truly measure MPG is to fill the tank each time and reset the trip. I do this and record mileage in every car I've ever owned. A little ****, but it lets you know that things are going ok.
I've only filled my new ride twice. The first was all highway, and I got 27.9. The second tank was a solid mix of driving and was 22.3. I live in Iowa, so there is barely any idling time. Zero traffic is great!

On my recent road trip I got 25 mpg combo of city/highway and 27 highway only with cruise control on 70 and the top down. I think I can do better with some Marvel Mystery Oil and higher octane. I am well pleased.

Supposed to be 16 gallon, but the Miles to Empty display seems to consider empty somewhere around 15 gallons used, probably just as a precaution. One day it said I had 28 miles to empty and i figured it must only have about a gallon left, but it only took 14 to fill.
Not long after I bought my car, I got it filled up, reset all the trip computers and got back on the freeway. The average mpg on the display kept climbing until it reached over 40mpg. As nice as that would be I knew it couldnt be right. As it turned out, the gas attendant didnt put my cap on all the way, causing the incorrect reading. (In Oregon you cant pump your own gas)

I dont really know why its a law but I should know beacause I get asked all the time since I manage a store with a gas station. The voters have rejected the idea of becoming self serve, maybe for the convenience, and to provide more low end jobs. I think New Jersey doesnt allow self serve either. I find it is nice not to have to get out of the car when getting fuel, but at the same time I hate letting someone else mess with my car.

I know that in New Jersey you cant pump your own, to provide more jobs, but i live in Baltimore and couldnt imagine having someone else pump my gas, plus tipping them after filling up with gas prices being as high as they are would jus irratate me more.
But anyway im back from my football game in VA Beach, we lost 32-23, but the trip was nice. 250 mile trip one way, and i made it there in a little over a half tank of gas, but i figured it out to be around 33 mpg, all highway, with a little traffic at one point, but hardly anything to affect the MPG......
Next road trip.......have to check the schedule.......
