I never take my car to the stealership for anything...ever.
I would have waived the warranty if they would have dropped 2 grand from the cost of the car.
Anything breaks, i have the tools and knowledge to fix it for alot cheaper.

Scheduled Maintenance Guide states 5K between oil changes
or every 3K in severe service conditions.
Thats one good lookin stang.
What did ya have to give for a new 08 back in August?
They are practically giving them away now.

WELCOME TO MF!!! Congrats on the new pony!
I change out the synthetic oil in our S197 4.0L vert every 5K miles. It costs a little more, but worth it IMO.
Hey bsnider - nice sig pic! Is that copter your work ride?

Hello,
New to the forum. I bought my first new car in August 2008: A Mustang, base model with a Pony pack.
I *love* this car, and I want to take good care of it. So, in addition to my introduction, I'd like to ask a question, please:
The dealership sent me a notice saying "You need to come in for your 5000 mi. checkup!" If I remember correctly from the owner's manual (I don't have it in front of me), I don't really need to go in until I reach 7800 miles.
Any recommendations on when I should bring it in for it's first maintenance? When I should go in for the next few (ie. every 6000 miles)? What should get done when I bring it in?
. . . and any reputable places to bring in a Mustang in or around Colma, CA?

P.S. Apologies to all if this is the wrong place to post my question. Please redirect me to the appropriate place if I am in error?

I changed my oil at the first 1,000 and then switched to full synthetic at 5,000. Other than the air and fuel filters, the car shouldn't requre maintenance until around 35,000 when you'll need to check break and tire wear. Depending on time, you'll also want to replace all fluids too.
The owners manual has a scheduled maintenance plan.
And don't forget to take care of the exterior with proper washing and wax. Lots of good info at autogeek.net.

I paid $19K for it around Labor Day. My 98' Ford Ranger truck was dying, and I needed a new vehicle . . . and the Mustang just seemed like a good idea.

Welcome to MF!
I change my oil every 5k, I take it to the dealership (not all dealerships are bad) and have them put in Motorcraft synthetic blend and use Motorcraft filters.
Also, any place that charges you to change oil will tell you 3k miles, because that is how they make money. Just an FYI
Here soon I will start my own oil changes. It is cheaper

Use "Normal Schedule - Cars" unless the following "Special Operating Conditions" are met:
1. Towing a trailer (ughhh)
2. Extensive idling or driving at low speeds for long distances.
3. Driving in dusty conditions.
4. Driving offroad (ummmm)
5. Use of E85 fuel 50% of the time or greater.
Pretty simple...
So MOST (as in probably 98% of us) fall in "Normal Schedule - Cars". Exceptions would be folks living way out in the sticks on long gravel roads and folks that limp 20+ miles to work every day in 5mph traffic.
"Normal Schedule - Cars" oil change interval is 7500 miles. Per the manual of course.
I am a FIRM advocate of getting the shipped oil out of the motor in 500-1000 miles to get any initial run contaminants out...but after that, 7500 per the manufacturer spec oil is all that is needed. This also jives with countless independent oil testing validating the optimal change interval is 7500-8000 miles.
