manual transmission fluid
I have a 2006 4.0 v6 and am wondering when I should change the transmission fluid. I have 85000 miles and am thinking of replacing the tranmission fluid. Any options will help.

I think I changed mine right around 88K and it was kinda medium blackish color. I went with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF I picked up at an AutoZone. You'll need a pump to put in the new fuild, and some thread sealant for the upper and lower plugs to complete the job. I've put 40K more miles on since then without an issue, will probably do it again this spring.

pump and sealant
So I will need a pump for the job. What do you mean by that, and what kind, and the sealant, I guess is for the pan bolts? Any suggestions on what kind of fluid to use, I have a few bottles of Royal Purple ATF fluid from my old job.

For a manual you do not drop a pan. There is an upper and lower plug...remove the lower to drain then put it back in. Remover the upper to refill. I just used a little plumbing teflon thread sealer after I cleaned the factory thread sealer off real well. You can go to ford and get theirs or use a non-permanent locktite I suspect. Just don't need to over do it with whatever you use. The pump is like a giant syringe, draw it up into it and then stick the tube into the refill hole and pump the fluid in. A cheapie was like $15 at Autozone. It takes a little time to do this and it a bit messy...there may be a better pump but in the end it worked fine and got the job done. You refill to just under the lowest level of the upper plug, kinda use your finger as a guide.
