The 4.0 was also used in the Explorer Sports Trac.

I had a navajo basically a explorer sport with a 4.0 had 225k on it when I sold it and it was still going strong when I sold it 2 yrs ago the young kid that bought it was still driving it all last winter had close to 250k on it he said it starts and runs every day no problems. so with proper care I am sure the mustang engine can be just as reliable.

my 08 gt has 50K as of earlier today and still runs just fine. except the auto trans. got replaced because of bad solenoids, seized valves, and pitted planetary gears. runs great now. jus keep up on it. can get kinda expensive especially since the prices on oil and gas are going up but keeping it up really pays off. exception of my tranny. (bad luck)...(and a lot of fun abuse) lol

My friend Bob just crossed 166K mi on his '06 pony. This guy lives in the mountains of VT up a dirt driveway a 1/4 mi long, works 90 minutes away (on a good day) and takes the pony out in all sorts of weather year 'round.

He's yet to have a major repair (he's actually hoping for 200K on the original brake pads) and the car still looks remakably fresh and clean.

These 4.0's are pretty darn tough if you take care of them. One of the benefits of such a venerable engine design is most of the bugs were long since worked out.

I now have 80,000 miles on my X-Charger and 110,000 miles on my 4.0 Mustang. This includes plenty of Auto-X, Open Track and hard street driving. I do take care of the engine with regular oil changes every 5000 miles using Amsoil 5-30 full synthetic along with the a Motorcraft oil filter.
