Default Check Engine light ON after installing BBK CAI...

Well, I've just installed my very first mod to my 2010 v6. I thought it went perfectly, and while I was enjoying my new torque (albeit without a tune yet, BBK claims this one doesn't need one- though it is planned), the check engine light has popped on...

The only thing I can think of that might be the culptrit... is I have a lot of types of gas in my car right now. That is - I had a half tank of Regular, and in anticipation of installing the CAI (BBK had a notice about check engine light if the engine runs too lean due to the added air) I topped that up with Premium 87 and 93 octane stuff. So there's a mix of fuel that maybe isn't jiving with the engine?

I guess my main question is, assuming I installed that thing correctly (and I'm 99% I got it right)- should I really be worried about my engine's safety? If it's due to my fuel mix, could it turn off as I fill it consistently with one rating of higher octane fuel?

Did you remove the negative battery cable from the battery for a few minutes after installing the CAI? That sometimes helps with the "no tune required" sort because it forces the computer to go back to it's baseline setting and "re-learn" the self adjusting engine management parameters. Worth a try anyway.

Yes, worth a try... although it was unplugged for the entire time I was installing the CAI- at least a good 25 minutes. Shouldn't the computer have been forced to reset during this time anyway?

I'll try it.

Arrgh! I left the negative connector unplugged for about 20 minutes- then just went to connect it again...

when I touched the connector to the battery I saw sparks! And the lights flashed on for a sec... the car is most definitely off and the lights are off as well. What's the deal?

I was able to disconnect/reconnect the negative plug no problem earlier today...

did you have a door open or the trunk open so the lights would be active when you replaced your battery cable?

All the BBK's do that, once I got my code cleared with a scan tool it never came back. Its because youre motor is running too lean with the BBK.

Haha.. okay. Whew! This hobby is... exciting. Okay so the sparks went away after I just hauled that cable up and planted it on the battery. Car started up, check engine light gone.

So I called it a night.. hopefullyI won't see it again when I go in to work. I think if I just lay off the peddle a bit... while the computer adjust. I don't know. When I really slammed it on when gunning past some other noisy sports car with my new juice - that's what set the light off.

05Mustang, you have experience with BBK I see. So you think that now the light is cleared I probably won't see it again?

I certainly don't want my engine running 'lean', I assume that's bad. It's just a matter of using the better fuel I assume.

I highly recommend purchasing a tuner with 3 custom tunes from Brenspeed or American Muscle. This will eliminate the error issue and also add real HP/Torque!

I purchased the Airaid CAI, which also does not require a tune. Fortunately, I did not have any code issues, however, I only felt minimal HP/Torque gain. Maybe a 5 HP or something.

I went with Brenspeed and am VERY satisfied with the HP/Torque performance, especially around the 2,500 - 2,800 RPM rang!!

The tune really wakes up the Stang and is more enjoyable to drive.
