Unless you are FI, most of your gains are from the tune... but even then, unless you are pushing big HP, a CAI is not really needed. My tuner actually told me not to bother with a CAI and he proved it with the tune as I am at 455RWHP through the stock airbox

I saw a used jlt cai with about 5k miles for 100 bucks. Does it sound like a good price? Will I need to replace the filter? Also can I put on a different filter? Like could I put a steeda filter or will only jlt fit?
Oh and once I get a tuner I just tell them I have a jlt cai and they make the tune accordingly right? I don't have to buy them together.

I paid about that with shipping for my intake. You can put an round filter on it as long as the diameter is big enough. Just tell the tuner what intake you have and they should have the rest of the info on file.

Those are some pretty nice numbers man!

Now just think what you could do with a decent intake

If the JLT is a tune-required CAI, then you can't run it until you have a tune (or you CAN run it and then throw a CEL and do possible engine damage after some time). Most tuners will write your tune based on the size of the MAF housing for that system plus any other mods you have.

Along with how quickly I could throw a rod. I kind of like not having holes in the side of my block and at 455, I don't want to push the stock bottom end any harder. But I do plan on swapping in a CAI come spring as the stocker is simply an eye sore when I pop the hood.

Now back on topic!

I have the BBK CAI and for the last 6 months it looked great and worked fine without a tune, but for some reason it just started shooting me lean codes even when they said it didnt require a tune. I tried everything I could to get it working again without lean codes. But the only fix was to put on the stock intake for the winter until I can get the funds to buy a tuner. So if you think your saving money by buying a CAi thats doenst need tuned. You will probably experience the same problems I have and spend alot more in the long run.

With most no-tune required CAI's, our engine will ride on the nat's azz edge of being out of spec. I'm thinking the denser, colder air and/or winter fuel put it over that edge.
