Default v6 Intake issues

I have a air filter from autozone that I put on my v6 mustang today. I took the old air hood off and replaced it with the air filter (just in drive way). there is one sensor that is attached to the stock air hood thing which I dont know what it's for. I started up the car with the air filter on and it sounded really nice. But after about 20 seconds it shut off. Is this because that sensor which was on the stock hood wasnt getting any airflow? would it be safe to drive around without it hooked up? lemme get a picture to clarify

That looks like the Mass air Flow sensor to me. It wont run right without it. Thats how your car will know how much air is going into the engine to help adust the air/fuel ratio. Unhooked it runs a failsafe mode which runs a very rich program also known as "limp home mode"

Yes, that's the MAF location, and yes, you need to buy an intake kit designed for the '05 Mustang V6 for it to operate properly (there are a number on the market)

As an example, you can see the AEM install on my car here: AEM Cold Air Intake

You'll note the fitting for the MAF on the back side of the pipe.

Yes, that's the one RPM outlet sells, and no, no tune was required (just pull the negative lead off the battery for five minutes, so the computer "relearns" with the new intake in place)
