Default Going For a New Rear End

Well, I'm finally going to go for the Ford 8.8 rear. I found a yard that sells rear ends for under 100 bucks

What should I look for when I'm looking for a good one? Are there cars other than Mustang GTs that use the same 8.8?

After I get one, is there any prep work involved? Should I have it dipped? Disassembled and inspected by a mechanic to make sure all the gears are good?

You will need to swap the pinion flange with the cobra flange (about $20) so your driveshaft will bolt up, but other than that it is a direct swap.

Where is this place by the way - that is a great price.

Goodluck finding a 2005+ rear end that is in good working condition, the 8.8's before 2005 are easier to find/cheaper. Hope you find one though!

Make sure the posi works, by making sure both wheels spin, open the diff and look for anything abnormal like metal shavings or inconsistencies with the ring and pinion. Pretty sure the 8.8s out of the older mustangs are a different size, so look for one from a S197.

Prep work - I flushed the gear oil and put in fresh Royal Purple and sealed it with a new gasket. Depending on your knowledge, it might be a good idea to have it checked before you find out the hard way. If you're not getting a new driveshaft you'll need the pinion flange out of a 03/04 Cobra. They're like $20 from latemodelresto

Yeah, I've done looking into the 03 Cobra pinion flange and I'll order it a few days before I go to the yard. I should be heading out there next weekend, so wish me luck!

They are def. diff between the S197 and other Mustang body styles... For example our rear end is a 3- Link instead of a 4-Link, and I think they are wider/shorter in comparison!

Have a good set of sockets, wrenches, breaker bar, pry bar, pb blaster(same thing as wd40), jack stands, floor jack, strong arms and about 2 hours of your time
