Default Transmission Catch Can

I had the catch can installed for a while, but had to figure out how to get the vent
line out of the bell housing. Finally did all that today. There is a KIT you can
buy that has a catch that goes on the firewall, but I used one of those cheap
eBay catch cans, and made my own.

I also lost the level tube, it fell under the battery tray, and was holding down the relay for my Fogs.
So, I used another dress up item.

I also relocated the breather, and used a Chevy drain plug to cap the top, and it all originally looked
like this before the relay was under the oil level dip-stick:



Moving on...

This will seep back down into the pan...

The catch can can be used to top off trans fluid from the can, rather then pull the fill plug.

I have used this hose before, and eventually, it will harden up and become semi-rigid.

I went outside at about 2PM, and saw that there was still a good red color in the hose.
I took off that top bolt off the can, looked into it, and it was down, so there was seepage.
I also used the lucas stuff as I knew it would sit in there, so I could check for leaks.

I started it up, and run it through the gears, for a few minutes. Turned the car off and
took another look, the hose and can had been evacuated. So, the vent works both ways.

Let me tell you, this was NOT easy to hook up on ramps. It was also not easy to get the
vent tube off the bell housing. I used a 2 foot long screw-driver, smacked the end of that,
and popped it off, and actually broke it off, which was fine. This left some of the plastic
fitting in the hose, and that also left the rest of it in the bell housing.

I had to cut the hose back about an inch. I had to pull the hose back to about mid trans
to hang down, to get enough to hang down to cut that part out. I still only got about 3"
to hang down to cut. It was difficult lying on the ground. On a lift, it would have been
easy.

Once I coupled the other hose end, I routed it where it all needed to be.

Why do you need a "Catch Can" on your transmission??

Two reasons I can guess.

1) the vent tube that runs over the top of these transmissions can sometimes spew fluid which ends up between the engine/trans making it look like a front trans seal leak.
2) gives you a good spot to add fluid if needed instead of having to go under the car...this one is arguable though because then how do you know how much fluid to add?

Why would it spew fluid unless it was OVER FULL??

Yep, that's what they say... It is what JDM claims, but theirs doesn't look like it
has any way to add fluid. I suppose you're to drill and tap a fill port? Anyhow,
yes... Yes, it is somewhat argumentative, you don't actually know if you need
fluid. I added a bottle of Lucas trans fix, helped a good bit.

I plan on adding a larger cooler, or an additional one, so I will be able to add the
the trans fluid based on the volume of the cooler. I am looking for a radiator
that has the trans cooler to run through there first, then the AUX cooler. That
will keep the trans temps more stable. Having just a cooler, the temp rises
at idle, and can get to be too high. Heat is the #1 killer of transmissions. My
former charger had a cooler more than twice the size of this one, and the temps
fluctuated from high to low, and it's just not good for the trans. Running it
too the rad cooler, keeps it at coolant temp, then an additional -15 degrees
or so at the aux cooler. So, even at idle, it will at least be the temperature
of the coolant, and not get hotter sitting too long at idle.

When you tune the vehicle, and set it for FIRM shifts, and you keep it at WOT
when running through all the forward gears, pressure can shoot fluid through the
vent. If the trans over-heats, it will shoot fluid out the vent. With the catch,
it will be recovered. You would now never loose any fluid unless a leak
develops anywhere else. Common area is the connections at the cooler.

Oh.....it's an Automatic Transmission........I thought it was a Manual.......sorry for the confusion!!
