I would not recommend anything OVER 1/4" without longer studs. I run 1/2" ones out back but installed extra-strength/length Moroso ones out back. I now have a full 1" of threads for the lug-nuts.

EDIT: Keep in mind that you MAY rub on strut over a heavy bump anyway. 1/4" may not be enough to clear in such cases.
