Default Need help on tire sizing.

I have a 97 mustang gt. I bought the bullit rims that a guy was selling. He told me that the rims are 17x8 with 275/40/17 on the rear and 255/40/17 on the front. I was told that you cant fit that wide of a tire on the rear. That leads me to believe that the rims are 17x9. If they are I need new tires soon can I do 275/40/17 on all four rims or should I do the size on there, if anyone has any other size options to consider? ( I kind of want to have the same size all the way around but as wide as possible, so i can rotate properly)

You can fit 275/40s on a 17x8 wheel. They will bulge though. Personally I wouldn't do 275s all around. I think it looks dumb. The tire will stick out past the fender lip in the front and I think you might rub when turning. If they are 17x9s then I would do 275/40 in the back (maybe even 285s) and 255/40 in the front. If they're 17x8s then I would go 245/45 in the front and still 275/40 in the back. Unless you don't like the bulge. (In which case I would say 265/40 would be fine for the back...or you could do 245/45 all around) A lot of people say this is fine and safe, others say no. I've never had a problem with it.

I do not recommend a 275 on an 8" wheel, as it is not an approved fit and will give poor wear and sloppy handling.

If not sure, take a pic looking down the side of the car so we can see how the sidewall fits up to the rim. The bulge, or lack there of, will make it pretty easy to see if it is an 8" or 9" wheel.
