Default Are Nitto tires narrower than other brands?

When I had my 1.5inch lowered '04 I put a set of 315's on the rear and had no rubbing issues.
Others who really slammed theirs had rubbing issues and a few people said that Nittos were not as wide as the other brands in the same tire size and it eliminated the rubbing issue.

I now have an '07 and the widest tire for my 10" rear wheels is a 285/40/18.
My rear wheel has a 41mm offset and the Goodyear F1 sidewall sticks out a little.
I am looking to lower it over the winter and am afraid of developing rubbing issues.

Is a 285/40/18 Nitto 555 narrower than the typical same size tire in any other brand?
I don't want to go to a 275/40/18 unless I really have to.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some thoughts or suggestions here.

I don't see how 285MM from one company could be smaller than 285MM from another company.

Talk to 99 GT Vert..... "Evan".....

I am pretty sure this has been mentioned somewhere before that Nitto's are infamously slightly narrower than other tire brands.

I've seen that mentioned in the wheel/tire section of the moddedmustangs forum on a regular basis also.

DTK..... I agree with the above and cannot explain exactly why they tend to be narrower, but is a VERY common observation from Nitto tires.

As for rubbing, I would not expect rubbing due to width once it is lowered further. Truth is, your car has ALREADY had suspension travel to the point it will be once lowered. Now, it will ride at this hight, but if it has not rubbed yet... I would not expect it to now.
