235/50's on gt500 wheels????
#6
Pretty much what Matt just posted.
A 9" wide wheel is as wide as I would care to stretch a 235/50 tire, and that's specifically considering autocross use and knowing that I personally don't scrape curbs and do pay attention to inflation pressures. IOW, I would not make 18 x 9 as a general-use recommendation for the OE 18's.
Keep in mind that the 235/50-18 was designed around a wheel of either 7.5" or 8" wide (depending on the mfr and tire model), and the OE 18 x 8.5" wide wheel is already at the tire mfrs' maximum recommended width for that size. There is not a whole lot of wheel protection against "curbing" as it is, and at 9.5" wide there will be none at all. Scarred-up wheels don't do much for your car's appearance . . .
Edit - I can't tell where you are from, but if you have any sort of winter season it might be a good idea to keep the 235/50's mounted on the OE wheels for that duty. Save the 9.5's for the 255/45's, 275/40's, or 285/40's that they properly fit with.
