Default busted thermostat housing(?)

So, i was driving down the highway, noticed my temp light. drove about another 5 miles(ya, i shoulda stopped. im a noob). I was going for an exit with a gas station. Got to the end of the exit ramp and noticed a lot of steam coming from the hood and immediately stopped. opened the hood after awhile, thermostat upper/lower seperated with remnants of a blown out gasket sticking out of the opening. battery had a crapload of blue battery acid(?) around the positive terminal. battery was dead, as well. wasn't even jumpable. got a new battery and it started right up.(killing it within a second) the oil didn't seem to have any coolant in it from which i tested from dipstick and a decent sample from the oil filter.

What other stuff should I look for or test? Is this an easy fix? would it worth it to line myself up with an aluminum upper/lower thermohousing?

I appreciate any comments, replies, questions, ect. on any of this. Thanks!

sorry if this is the wrong section

Common enough that Ivanrad is organizing a group buy (see his thread above) to replace the plastic Ford housing with a metal one.

Replacing the housing is easy, unless you have the Xcharger (had to remove the blower to get to one bolt to get the housing out when mine blew). Takes less than an hour to remove and replace the housing.

And your description sounds like the split housing:

Three bolts hold the housing in place

Get the aluminum one. If I still had my 2006 I would get one and swap it.

There's a limited time offer starting today for a metal one -- $30 off the normal price.
Amazon.com: 2005-2010 Mustang Metal V6 4.0 Thermostat Housing/water Outlet: Automotive Amazon.com: 2005-2010 Mustang Metal V6 4.0 Thermostat Housing/water Outlet: Automotive

Maybe you can contact the seller about putting a rush shipment on it if you need it ASAP. I just ordered one myself today...

My old thermostat housing leaked for over a year. It was a slow leak and kept going into the valley of the engine.
I finally fixed it about 6 months ago and now I am experiencing a slow coolant leak coming out of the head gasket. Gotta love it! :-/
Replace out upper/lower thermostat housing & thermostat sensor.
I would recommend getting the aluminum thermostat housing that is now available.
Good luck!
