heads
ok rather than go threw patriot or whoever else does heads for the 4.6, has anyone just bought two new PI heads from like jegs or somthing (about 350 a pop), and sent them out to the machine shop of choice to have them ported to hell, nice bigger valves and such, sounds like a better idea to me..so i can do at my own pace rather than pay a lump some for already worked heads..im thinking now that i have pretty much full bolt ons with cams and gears..maybe do some heads up, and swap my shortie headers for long tubes, and swap in the vt stage ones and comp springs that are already on my car, throw a nice 75 shot on top of it and call it a day? just looking for some input

RE: heads
Those PI heads jegs has are the stock heads on 99 to 04 So they wont make a diff.
But getting a set and getting the **** ported out of them would kick some ****.
And upgrading the valve/cam system in them would be sweet.
But at what cost ? You know what I mean ?
Id see what a good performance machine shop would charge to do the porting and polishing and weigh that against a set of pre worked heads and cams

RE: heads
The machine shop you pick is going to need to be very familar with 4.6L 2v heads. You cannot just start hogging out the ports and installing huge valves and expect to make good power with them, they are tempermental.
If the shop hasn't done it before, I would not even dream of having them mess with em. X2 if they don't have a bench test flow machine to check the work.
In any case, by the time you get done paying for all of the parts and labor you are not going to save that much money anyway. Aftermarket parts for the 2v head assembly are expensive, and if you don't have a couple of heads for them to bench flow and practice on (aka they haven't done it before) your probably not gonna get lucky and get the results you want.
In any case, your talking about spending a large amount of money on pretty lackluster results. IMO heads are a complete waste of money on a stock shortblock car.Even if you get lucky and get some good prices you will still probably spend close to a grand, plus the cost of tearing the engine apart/removing it from the car(unless you can do this yourself) etc etc all for a grand total of maybe 20 WHP.
People generally go with wilder cam profiles and ported heads because the stock setup will not support more RPM. The port jobs and cam profiles allow you to run a higher RPM motor and make more power, but on the stock shortblock the results are not nearly so spectacular.

RE: heads
i got the patriot heads (stage II) and Comp Cam (stage I cams) on a stock short block and im not happy with my gains at all. for the heads and cams and all the parts it cost me over 2g's and i did the work by myself. plus the stage one cams are not enough. to go higher u need notched pistons. so my suggestion is you save up ur pennies and buy a forged out short block and then some heads and put awsome cams on it and wen ur done spray the **** out of it.
