I have an automatic (sadly) 2001 GT with 99K miles. It has recently started having issues when shifting into 3rd and 4th gear. When trying to shift the entire car shudders and I can hear an audible "bang" If I get on it pretty hard it'll rev up to about 5k RPMs and then shift with less of a shudder. But keeping the pedal to the metal all the time is really killing my already less than awesome gas mileage

From what I understand this seems to be a fairly common problem with this particular car. Some people say a trans flush with fix it and others say it's the torque converter...? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Mine shudders some when it shifts into the 3rd and 4th because the converter locks and makes it shift harder (saves gas if the converter is locked), I felt sure it was just normal for it to do that. Mine doesn't make a "bang" sound though. I would check the fluid level for sure.
