Default Overheating

i have a 1997 gt conv. approx 150k miles, last few weeks ive been having an overheating problem. car gets hot and coolant comes out of the over flow reservoir cap.

had the system flushed , replaced the thermostat....still having problems

bought a new cap tonight to see if that helps tomm.

have not lost any power , car seems to run fine. ( besides overheating )
i see no water in the oil and no oil in the water, im assuming the head gaskets are fine and the electric fan does turn on.....

im outta ideas, any suggestions would be appreciated...

I know it costs money....but look at changing the radiator. May not be efficient enough any more, and 150k....it did it's job. I should be in Tampa in Aug if you need help (:

If it's only overheating at a stop or driving slow, I'd bet it's the fan. They are known to have issues with the 3 pin plug. Pull it out and take a look for damage/melting.

If it's over heating while moving at speed, check the radiator for blockage (inside and out).

Look at the water pump next. That's as easy as taking off the radiator cap with the engine cool, starting it up and see if the coolant circulates when it comes up to temp.

thanks for the reply's....it was getting hot while not moving ( fan was checked and seemedto turn on when needed ) i did run it today with a new reservoir cap , it got warm, but not as hot. and didnt lose any water. also if anyone knows - with my old cap , when i got home it would have quit a bit of pressure behind it ( would hiss alot when i slowly removed it. with the new one, no pressure behind it. ...... im hoping that maybe after changing all that i did may have helped the problem, will see in the next few days. still plan on doing another full system flush this weekend myself. i didnt like the way the shop did theirs.

Probably needs a radiator. They are only single row and plug up real easy. If you shop around you can find a replacement for under $100. I had to replace mine 6 months ago for the same thing.

There should be pressure behind it if it's hot.... the hotter it is the more pressure there will be.
I'd still be leary of the fan running 100%. It sounds very similar what happend to me... then one day the plug caught fire and melted into a big mess of a weekend project.

I recommend a 3 row radiator. I put a stock rad on my 96 & it wasnt enough for az heat. Had to upgrade to a 3 row. I think this generation 4.6s tend to run hot on the hwy.
