My '98 GT made a nasty sound from under the hood at a point too. Turns out it was my alternator pully. And if would go away after the car was idling for a bit. I was in need of a new alternator anyways, so I killed two birds with one stone. That's what my money's on.

If it's the pump, its a "cake-walk" to swap out. Just be sure to clean the mating surfaces for the new O-ring. Don't wanna install the new one and have it leak right away.

Allright.... I thnk I may have the culprit..

The main drive/crankshaft pully is REALLY wobbly, so wobbly that the belt wont fully seat on it. It is half riding on the edge. Im lucky to have got back and forth to work probably...

So, is the pully loose, broke or ???

Is it a pain to replace? Not sure how this happened?

Thanks!

Shouldn't be too hard. Main problem for getting the old one off would be holding it steady so you can break the bolts loose. I've never taken one off so I wouldn't be able to give advice on that.
On a side note, you're lucky nothing got SERIOUSLY messed up :/ I'd browse for a schematic of the pulley. Like a part blow-up. Should just be able to use Google.

Good luck on the fix bro.

Cool - thanks!

Looks like I can get an OEM one for about $60 at Autozone.

Maybe it is just loose? I dont see how this harmonic balancer could break?

The harmonic balancer is just like any rotating part. Time takes it's toll. heating/cooling, a number of other factors can cause one to become "un-balanced" or outta whack. Cheap fix though. You'll need a Puller to get the old one off I believe. They got them at autozone to rent. So you should be all set.

If it's a standard pulley puller, you can rent one at autozone for 40$ or buy one there for 20$. Tho....theres are kinda cheap and don't have many options. I bought this pulley puller and installer at harbor freight.

http://www.harborfreight.com/pulley-...set-40749.html

works just fine.

I got the pulley from Autozone for $60 - and renting the puller for free.

Now the hard part...how do I take off the bolt?!
Its an automatic transmission
I cannot get an impact gun in there - not enough room
Impact wrench doesnt seem to have enough power

The pulley turns every time I try and remove the bolt - how do I stop the pulley from turning?

Forget putting the wrench on it and bumping the engine - way too risky...

I heard there may be a grommet on the tranny that I can pull out and stick a screwdriver in to keep the crank from turning, but where is it located?

Thanks!

I have heard that in "certain cases" it can be a 2 person job. As crazy as it sounds, I'd try leaving the belt on. That way you'll have a little bit more resistance to it spinning while your trying to loosen it. Have a friend apply inward pressure on the belt. As he's doing this, apply the impact or whatever you've got to the bolt. I wish I could give you more info man, but that's about the best I got. Hope it goes well!

Got the pully of and new one on - will post a few pics on how...

Just need torque specs now for the pulley bolt - or torque sequence if there is such a thing...

Thanks!
