I own a 2001 Mustang GT with the Mach system. My front speakers are no longer working and I wanted to replace them with a different set of 6x8s. I was told that because factory speakers are 8ohms, that replacement speakers (4ohms) would not work with the Mach amp? What should I do to replace my speakers? Thanks in advance

You can use 4ohm speakers, it will be fine. And I'd have to go doublecheck (still have my old speakers in the garage), but pretty sure the factory speakers are also 4ohm, not 8 as you were informed.

You really think so? I heard that Mustangs WITHOUT the Mach audio system run 4ohms speaker but mach runs 8ohms. Here's the quote from Crutchfield:

"That's because the front door woofers are wired in parallel and crossed-over to pump out nothing but bass. The rear deck woofers are wired the same way. The problem is that the Mach speakers are 8-ohm speakers and aftermarket speakers are rated at 4 ohms (or lower). They aren't compatible with the Mach amplifiers."

I just don't want to dump money into speakers and plug them in just to fry the amp or for them to not work is all

I have Alpine component speakers installed in the front of my car, running through the stock amps. The Alpine's are 4ohms. I can assure you that everything will be ok.

Worst case scenario is you go spend about $1 at Radio Shack on 4 @ 4ohm resistors and solder them on to the speaker terminal and then solder the speaker wire connection onto the resistor lead. Oh, and you'll probably want some heat shrink tubing, so add another $4. And if you don't have a soldering iron, you'll need one of those too. But I can promise that everything in this paragraph will be unnecessary.

My bro in-law's '03 GT also has aftermarket speakers in place of the original Mach speakers. Guess what their impedance rating is...?

If you are replacing subs, you'll probably want to replace them with similar speakers, not the standard 6x8s which usually handle a wide freqency range and will not sound good used as subs. You should be able to get the factory speakers from Ford.
Adding a 4 ohm resister in series means that one half of your power will be dissipated by the resister, cutting your base volume down.
Are your front speakers totally out? Are you sure it's the speakers and not the amp?

I currently have another thread going now where I'm trying to diagnose the problem, but it turns out I have a wiring problem or amp issue causing this instead of a speaker problem. I WAS going to replace the speakers but they're fine, I just need to fix what's wrong with the rest.
