How to get good HP out of a 4.6 without spending big bucks.
#11
I got a 2001 GT mustang. Installed comp cams, pro comp intake, bbk throttle body, bbk long tube headers, flow master exhaust, 410 gears, aluminum driveshaft, new tuner and tuned. Car made 300 HP to rear wheels. So my question is where can I get more HP without having to spend big money. Would it be better to go back through the motor or maybe change heads? Install a small supercharger or turbo? I would like to get to 400-450 HP. If anyone has already done this I would love to hear what you did and any advice would be great. Thanks!

The TFS heads are the best available right now, but expect to pay around $1000 per head, plus the cost of gaskets and fasteners. If you don't think forced induction is in your future, go with the smaller combustion chamber size for a compression bump and more power. You may also want to consider a set of cams that would be better suited to the TFS heads to maximize their N/A power potential. If you are still running the stock PI intake, upgrade to a Bullitt or TFS intake when you do the heads. The total cost of heads, cams and intake will put you very close to what a new supercharger from Vortech or Paxton would cost.
If the car is not a daily driver, you could also consider an electric water pump to free up some additional power.

i considered the tfs heads and cams/intake, but i didnt like the fact that NA they lost a bunch of low end. they gain from 5k rpm and up, but you sacrifice low end performance. however when i get around to building my next 4.6, i will most likely put the TFS heads on and swap my supercharger over, this will negate any low end loss and will improve my superchargers performance throughout the power band. last time i checked a head/cam setup ran close to $5k and required custom tuning as well, so staying NA with heads, or bolting on a supercharger cost approx the same at the end of the day. but you will have more power where u want it with a supercharger

Step 1: save money
Step 2: go to corral.net
Step 3: buy a used supercharger for less than $3000
Step 4: install said supercharger
Step 5: pay $400 to get car tuned
Step 6: enjoy 400+hp

The problem with the 4.6 platform is that the costs of parts has not come down. The new 5.0 platform is far superior and by time u supercharge and spend to money to keep up with the new mustangs you would be better buying one. Once the cost of the 4.6 aftermarket comes down it won't be as bad.
