Default new heads on old motor

i'm currently putting on new intake and cam and really can't afford heads but after i got the car tore down i figured while i have all that stuff off it would be a good time to do the heads. my problem is that someone told me that if i put new bigger heads on a old motor (120000 miles) that it would blow the rings and also 1 more thing if i do get heads i'm wanting out cheap but iwould want something a little more than the gt 40 but would settle for them if they would give me a big increase.
