Default Steering Wheel Movement?

What would cause the steering wheel and the plasic stuff behind it, like the switch and all that stuff, up and down, 1/4"? The part that goes through the fire wall doesn't move. It used to do it about an 1" but I found a loose bolt and tightened it. Suggestions?

First guess would be Tilt Steering and a tooth or two are broke or the pin is bent. Undo the 2-3 screws in the plastic stuff behind the steering wheel and move it while looking in there.

The tilt appears to work fine? Could it be the tilt mechanism causing it still?

Check the pin that the tilt mechanism holds onto, I just replaced what looked to be old coat hanger wire on mine. Before this it would flex due to the wire bending etc..... replaced it with a nail so we will see how long that last.

there is more than 1 bolt that needs to be tightened..once you remove the switch assembley you can access 3 on an extension and correct torx socket I believe and the 4th is impossible if yours is anything like mine
