Turned timing down....ran like ass

Turned timing down....ran like ***
since gas has gotten so expensive, i filled up w/ 87 still at 14*'s, drove a couple miles and it was fine. Then when I got home I turned timing to 10*'s, it surged like ****en hell and barely ran. I took it for a test drive and I lost 1/2 my power, it hesitated like ****, and backfired[:@]. Well I said F it and put it back to 14* and will fill up w/ some 91 over the weekend. Whats the correct way to decrease timing. Should I of ran 87 w/ 14*'s till it pinged and then turn timing down? Either way Im keeping it at 14*...I want to make it faster not slower anyways[8D].

i get better gas mileage running 14* and 93 octane with more power so im leaving it right were it is. as for retarding your timing back you gotta unplug your spout connector and then turn the dizzy counter clockwise if i remember. either way you need to use a timing light. then you plug the spound connector back in and your done. same thing goes for advancing it

That sounds closer to 10* retarded than 10* advanced....

The difference between 10 and 14 will need a dyno or clocks from the dragstrip to tell the difference. If your car runs like *** at 10 deg. It's not the ignition timings fault.
A 4 deg timing change is about a tenth in the quarter. Few people can feel a tenth in the 1/4.
If you are doing this for gas mileage. Advance is better. Run it at 14.
