5.0 Questions
I have an 1989 Ford Mustang Convertible, I just put a manual transmission in it. I was putting a new timing chain in it, and snapped a bolt off in the block. I've tried everything to get the blot out, but I think the owner before me, may have cross treaded. Anyways, I work for a used car lot as a mechanic, we have two 5.0 out of explorers. I've heard that some of these have gt40 heads? How can you tell without taking the heads off or can ya? And are these the same blocks? Any help would be lovely.

yea all the 5.0 explorers had the gt40 heads. 96-97.5 have gt40s and 97.5+ have gt40p (need special headers). the gt40s have 3 vertical bars on the side of the head while the p's have 4 bars. also on the corner of the heads near the block the regular 40s will say GT while the p's will say GTP
as for the broken bolt. did u try drilling the middle of it and using and easy out? while you have the timing cover off. change the cam while ur in there to something better as well as upgrade ur valve springs

Night & day difference.
My friend & I just dyno'd his 'lil 306 with GT40P heads, mild cam, & Performer Intake combo last weekend. 250rwhp & 300rwtq. Not bad considering he hasn't had a custom tune burned for it yet & it's nothing fancy nor expensive. Just keep one thing in mind; it's not just the heads. The Explorer intake flows much better than the stock H.O. intake & is pretty much a direct swap as well IMHO....

you can go 11's on gt40 heads, my buddy did it all day long, yeah he ditched a little weight and they were very mildly ported just some exhaust work, and a comp valve job... no more than $200 in work on them
he went 11.80's on his '92 GT w/ stock gt40 tubular and squirting 125 on his stock t5
gt40's have bigger ports, and bigger valves.
but ALL heads need some port work... no sense in putting them on box stock
fyi i hate the "p" heads.... no where near what real 40's are good for no matter what anyone says

Be careful with the "easy-out" if it breaks you are F'ed. if you are able to drill out the center, keep stepping the bits up until you reach the inner edge of the threads then pick them out with a dental pick or something. If there is an easy out jammed in the hole you won't get it out easily.
