Default Gas Gauge

i just put my stock gauges back in and the other owner said when the needle was at empty that id still have a 1/4 so when i was puttin the needle back on i jus put it to full but i only had like a half tank then i went and filled it up and figured this would work. might of been an idiotic thing to do i dunno. but now ive driven round town fer tha las week n put on about 150 km n the needle hasnt moved at all. did i screw sumthing up by doing this or what? i do have 2.73s in it still so its not too bad on gas and ive been drivin it lightly. how can i fix this? i talked to my mechanic today n he said it might have been the sending unit but we didnt think it was because it working before, would it **** it up if it wasnt in all the way because im startin to think that. and if i did put it in tha right way again tonight will it go to where its suppose to be?
