Default Temp Gauge problems

Hi All, am new to the Forum, happy to join your ranks! I have a '94 GT with temp gauge problems and am hoping for some help. My dash gauge does not register properly, and will jump into the red one moment, then drop to normal operating range the next and will do so when I'm driving around. I have replaced the 2 sending units, the thermostat, and the sending unit. I have also checked the coolant temp, with a thermometer after driving, and it is cooling properly. I had a mechanic check this also. They are at a loss to suggest causes or remedies as are the folks at a local parts store. I was hoping to install a stand alone temp gauge and mount it to the dash or console, but again the shop and parts stores had no suggestions. Is there anyone out there who could tell me of a supplier where I could get a gauge to bypasss the stock one? Thanks for any help you can offer!

Sounds like you're going to extreme lengths to fix a simple issue. The gauge wiring is straight to the sending unit, absolutely nothing else ties in. If its spiking like that, chances are good that wire is being grounded out momentarily, as with all sending unit gauges, if you ground the lead wire, the gauge should peg full/hot. Finding the issue with the wiring could point you in the direction of a larger problem that has gone unnoticed up to now, so its a good idea to find and fix it.

Well, got the temp gauge solved. It ended up that the gauge was faulty. Picked one up at a salvage yard and the car is running fine now!
