Default Effect of larger MAF on computer?

I am doing a GT40 heads/intake swap, I have heard recommendations to use a specific size MAF with that set up; but what I am wondering is if the computer knows the difference or is the sensor the same but just the opening is wider. If you use a "bigger" MAF, does the computer need to be reprogrammed?

Also, MAF's are expensive, does anyone recommend just using the explorer MAF on my foxbody? I assume it is bigger.

Thanks for all the help.

The computer shouldn't have any issues with a larger MAF. Just order the MAF that's calibrated to your injectors. 19 pound injectors are stock.

There is not real "best size" MAF as the effect on performance is minimal at best. Just get the fuel injectors that fit your performance needs.

I've had good luck with C&L's. You should have no issues whatsoever as long as you have the proper calibration tube for whatever injectors you plan on running. I've heard other people say go with a Pro M one, but I've only used the C&L's. It's up to you. What I like about them is you use the stock sensor, it's a bigger housing, and it's 30 bucks for a calibration tube over buying a new two hundred dollar sensor.

I'm actually selling one now, but it has the tube for 19 lbl injectors, so you would need to buy the $30 tube for the 24's or whatever you're planning on running.

Oh I didn't even see that was an option. I see they are cheaper and that is what I'm going for this summer. I am going to be running the 19 lb injectors for now. As far as I know, my stock sensor was working fine. Do the C&L ones come with an air diffuser thing or something or is it just a tube?

All the C&L is a larger aftermarket housing that uses the stock sensor. The difference is all in the calibration tubes. You can swap them out very easily and cheaply. Each calibration tube cost about 30 bucks if you buy them new. All they do is scoop up the air and trick the computer that "only this much air is coming in." I've used them for almost 3 years now without any issues what so ever. As long as you have the proper tube, you should be fine. The only other thing is be sure to use the cold air intake (meaning make sure your intake goes into the fender wall instead of just putting the filter on the MAF). According to C&L, if you put the filter on the MAF it will also screw it up.

I have one that I'm selling now with the 19lbl injector tube, so if you're interested, let me know. I got an extra one with my new motor, so obviously I don't need two.
