Default Lazy question about inner tie rod ends

Hey guys, this may be a lazy *** question, but................do I HAVE to take off the outer tie rod ends to change the inner tie rod ends? Reason why I ask is last time I took the outer tie rod ends off, I had to break them to get them out and I didn't even drive the car. I don't want to buy new ones again if I don't have to. lol

lol Damn. I was hoping you could just leave the outers in and screw them simultaneously to get the inners in and out, but ok. I'll do it the right way. haha I've never done inner tie rod ends before.

There is a few nice videos on YouTube that will walk you right thru it. When you pick up the tie rods at the part store remember to borrow the tie rod removal tool

Wow Ive never had to break outer tie rod ends to get them out of the knuckle.

Just use a pickle fork on it and while prying up rap the side of the knuckle with a heavy ball peen hammer. I can change outers in about 10 min.

@dawson, yes, that is how I always do it and I never have had a problem, but for whatever reason when I put the SN95 spindles in I had to take the outer tie rod ends back out (I cant remember why, but I did) and I had to hit it so hard with a hammer that it broke with the upside down crown nut/liquid wrench/pickle fork tool at the same time. lol

No big deal, even if I break them screw it. I've seen a video on how to do it and he took them out, but that guy also spent 10 minutes trying to get the cotter pin out! hahaha I figured I should ask anyways. There are no stupid questions....just stupid people. lol

You can leave the ball joint of the tie rod attached to the knuckle. You just have to keep in mind that while you are tightened down the inner to the rack that the outer will be spinning on the inner as well so the alignment will be way off.

I plan on measuring it with a tape measure before and after.

Yeah you can get them close enough that way. Actually did mine like that when I repainted it and then took it work and put it on a hunter alignment machine and adjusted it and now my steering is off. Now I gotta do it again.
