I am looking at purchasing a 1965 Mustang... Is there anyway to do a carfax for a car this old? I tried and it did not like the VIN. Any suggestions? I want to know as much about the car's history as possible - before I purchase.

Car fax won't recognize the older short VIN's. It has to have at least 16 characters.

A title search with the DMV may help. Let them know you plan to purchase the vehicle and why you would like to research past owners. If they do work with you (some can be down right uncooperative) you can attempt to contact previous owner to get their story of the car.


Other than that you might try asking a neighbor of theirs if they know of any history of the vehicle.

I would be more worried about condition than a car fax.

A lot of wrecks never show up on car fax.
