Lost the motor in my baby this evening

RE: Lost the motor in my baby this evening
I have lost engines before, found a couple I didnt know I had as well. one is in the shop as you read this, I went home and there it was sittin on the floor lookin all innocent. Sometimes they sprout legs and walk off, othertimes you forget where you put them, but to lose one from under the hood, well that is rare..
jus kiddin.. Sounds like a tear down. You can possibly rebuild it, often the least expensive route to a "new" engine but also usually the longest. if parts are no good, like the crank and all the rods, or a hole in the block/spun main etc, then you need to find that stuff. A crate engine is a way to go as well, you can pick displacement and HP levels quite easy. have seen some 400hp 347s for around $6k, tough to build that engine for that much.
Alternatively you can hit the junkyards and see if they have an 5.0L layin around, explorer engines are healthy and Mustangs had nice ones too. 86 and later are best for the hydrualic roller cams. use the oil pan and pickup tube from your 289, replace the intake with your 2 or 4 barrel intake and it will drop right in there. Remember that the flexplates and flywheels are different from the old to the new engines. Sometimes you can get a 5.0 for $500 or less, it all depends.

I hope your engine is ok, but if not heres where you can get a real sleeper quality is great and so is the prices.
I am posting the ebay store because it gives base prices I just noticed the 347 was not there its priced around $3,700.00
and here is a pic of one with the cobra upgrade. Sorry the pic is not very good

Thanks for all the information. Tough right now to look at the car, right in the middle of soccer season with the kids. After that, we'll tear into it. If I would replace the motor with another one. your say 86 (5.0) or newer would bolt right up? Is there a link describing that swap? Interesting idea!

RE: Lost the motor in my baby this evening
Check the FAQ.. There is swap info in there. The oil pans, pickup, flexplate, and balancer are all different from the FOX engines. Any ford 289/302/5.0L that isnt a cammer will physically bolt in with the right oil pan.
They say the 93up 5.0 Explorer engines are the same as the 93 Cobra engine.. but the 86-92 engines have Forged pistons, and roller cams from the factory. 93 up are hypereutectic pistons, that are a bit weaker but still work good. I have 245k miles on a 92 5.0, they are good engines.

Looks like I'm going to be put a 5.0 (88) motor in the car. The other motor is junk, not worth fixing.
Have to switch the oil pans. Probably put an aftermarket intake, carb and headers on it. The car is an automatic. Anything that I need to be awere of or missing? Appreciate your suggestions. Thanks
