Gas Mileage for a 1966 289 V8?

RE: Gas Mileage for a 1966 289 V8?
I have a completely stock A-code. I disconnected the AC and the Smog Pump (still in place just no belt).
I get anywhere from 16 to 19 on the highway and around 13 to 15 in town. I thought I'd do much better on the highway but since it's a C4 and has 3.00 gears it doesn't really like cruisin' at 75 to 80. I do but the car doesn't. ;-)
If I go 60 it's much better.

Jim,
Which fuel filler tube is used with the larger tanks when installed in the 65/66? I have a '69 twenty gallon tank and re-used the stock '65 filler with some "modification". Frankly, it looks hack and I'd like to clean it up a bit. Is the '69 filler tube a direct replacement?
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
I put a used filler from a 68 on an auxillary tank I put on a 79 Dodge van and it looked longer than a 66, probably due to the different body style.I would assume because the fitting diameter on the tank is the same, but closer to the pipe, that a shorter rubber section is needed. Maybe it can be forced up the filler pipe.

I did this swap probably 13 years ago so the memory is a bit sketchy, but I recall that the angle of the filler tube was more of a problem than the length of it. I think in addition to cutting it shorter, I placed another cut further up the tube and added a second rubber coupler so that the tube could be wiggled and lined up properly. I'd love to hear that a '69 filler tube will fit right up. I may just look ata 67/68 a 69 and a 70 filler tube andcompare them to the 65/66 if I got up to NPD tomorrow and see if there are any differences in the degree of bend.
Thanks,
Jeff
