Cam, stroke, crank, pistons ??

Run with the Chevrolets?

Spend all that money on a short block and run stock heads?

That is like ordering a T-Bone steak with french fries.

Dont doubt the power from parts that work well together.
My s/c347 is a frigin beast.
But the lil engine I had in my car before was a blast to drive.
I have a 289 .30 over with gt 40 heads, 1.7 roller rockers with millidon pushrods and a beefy comp cam.
Cant remember the specs but it was the highest lift I could run without valve reliefs in the pistons.
Has a tiny 525 carter AFB carb,a rmp performer intake, Mallory unilite ignition and a MSD blaster coil.
It has left quite a few non nos and non supercharged 5.0 mustangs in its day.
Top loader 4 speed and 373 open dif. I kept a sand back on the right side for traction. lol
Its on a stand waiting to go back into another project. My wifes 65 fastback.
The lil engine made enough torque to snap 2 drive shafts and broke the front yoke in half.
Then on the track I out ran a 70 360 cuda every pass at Atlanta dragway.
lol I was in the high 13's

For a mild street engine it was a blast reliable when I didnt break things with it.
Never had it dynoed but fair guess would say it was at least a 300 hp motor pushing 375 or more torque.
I can tell you driving my wifes 04 gt that lil 289 was a lot stronger than the 4.6 is.

theres some confusion......yes 69-70 heads had slightly bigger valves and int ports and smaller chambers, ex ports still sucked, up to 75 on truck and van heads had smallr valves but same sized ports as 69-70 heads and larger chambers. Besides the chambers the 69 block had a shorter deck height which increased compression a bit, you can deck any 351w block to 9.48 and bring compression up and better quench, I'm pretty sure all the pistons are the same but later blocks they are down in the hole a bit. As far as the best flowing stock head is the gt-40p found on 5.0 exploders but headers are hard to find. Regular gt-40's are next and can be ported to flowOK.

Other than that, go aftermarket if you want some good power or have your heads cnc ported by "powerheads" but thats alomost as expensive as aftermarket and more expensive than used aftermarket.

Just put some AFR 185's and a roller cam on it and be content with your 450-500hp.

Well, plus all the other crap that's needed also.
