Sandblasted inside... What to prime with?
#12
ok TRUE, DTM primers SHOULD have phosphoric acid and zinc in them for adhesion on top of NOT sandblasted metal
epoxy primer will stick to anything though, i have some on my pontoon boat's aluminum pontoons and didnt hardly sand it or anything

I agree epoxy sticks to anything that why I was saying that labeling an epoxy primer "DTM" epoxy primer is just a marketing thing because you can use any epoxy direct to metal. They also call the etch primers "DTM" and should only be used on bare metal. I don't think you should use any etch primer or any other etching product on sandblasted metal as the acid can get trapped in the porous surface and eat through the paint later.

I used PPG DPLF epoxy and was happy with it. It does have problem with sanding. It will make little tar ***** on the sandpaper.
Over at hotrodders ( http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/body-exterior/ ) there is a forum of pro painter and they all rave about SPI epoxy primer. I tried it and think it sprayed, covered and sanded beter than PPG. The best part is it is 1/2 the price.

Also from the SPI site for the epoxy primer:
NEVER use SPI Epoxy over a Soda Blasted vehicle, Acid
Etch/Wash Primer, Rust Converter or other Metal
Treatments. NEVER!
Good Luck

ANY primer will stick to metal that has been sandblasted properly... plenty of tooth there for the primer to bite on.
As stated, go with epoxy, it is just way better than the old lacquer based primers (like oxide primer).
I don't think it makes a lot of difference if you spray or brush, but spraying will be easier to get into most of the tight areas and will save you loads of time. A cheap gun will work fine for primer...
Remember, you will need primer and CATALYST, and likely some thinner/reducer as well depending on the product.
And some lacquer thinner for cleanup.

Yeah I sprayed mine with the cheap $14.99 harbor freight gun. I've gone through a few or those cheap guns and they work well for what they are. I wouldn't expect a show quality finish out of one but they are great for primer.
