Default Leaking rear seal on a t-5

I bought an overhauled t-5 Borg Warner transmission out of a 93 Mustang on EBay to put in my 66. I was ready to jack it into place, and decided to put the transmission fluid in first so I wouldn't have to mess with a hose later. The fill cap is on the side of the transmission, so I turned in partially on its side. After I had already put about half the container in I looked over and saw a huge red puddle behind me. Transmission fluid was pouring out of the rear. After I cleaned up the mess and set the transmission level again I noticed that the fluid level was close to the level of the fill plug. Did I just over fill it? Did having it on its side cause it to leak? Or did I buy a transmission with a bad rear seal?

might be a stupid question, but did you have the yoke in place?

I'm gonna guess no slip yoke. Oops. Been there.

alot of times a yoke can wear and cause a leak from that seal. Even if a new seal is in place.

Yeah if the yoke for the driveshaft isn't in the tail shaft seal has nothing to seal up against.
