Default 1969 mustang coupe rebuild. first timer help

Ok guys I have a 1969 mustang coupe that i purchased for my wifes birthday.
this is my first rebuild of this sort, or rather my biggest to date.
I have a few questions that i despretely need answered
1> I have found out that the last owner has installed a new trans into the car.He claims its a automatic AOD trans from another mustang but doesnt know the year.
the gear selector < shifter> that goes on the floor board is not there.
I have found several available and they look like they would be the right one. I have a "hump" between the seats with a square hole.
but I seem to have found two difrent units one that has a levered bar with a hole underneath on the bar, and one that has the same levered bar with a hole and a cable comming out.
I know this is a dumb question but which one is right? and how can i verify what trans i have in the car
2> i have to but a drive shaft. will a used one be ok for a daily driver? and the last owner said it was the same connection as a c6? how can i make sure i get the right one?

You will be able to use a stock 69 mustang shifter.. Since you dont have the original one or linkage start looking on ebay for a shifter and bezel and then get the adapter linkage for the AOD swap. Make sure you have a TV cable for providing line pressure to the trans equivalent to the throttle position.

Usually the AOD will Say Metric on the trans pan.

Get online:
Get the linkage:http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/ite...sp?T1=53104+01
Check out this site and pretty much pick up whatever you dont have.

ok but another question is how do i verify what trans i actually have i know it was replaced by the previous owner
i was told that a C4 trans have 11 bolts and a C6 has 17 but mine has 14 that would make it a MX3 is that correct?
and if so what size / type drive shaft would i need

If your 69 Mustang is a H code , H code is a 351W the original trans is a FMX not a C6 or C4. FMX used to be called a baby C6 , FMX came with a torque bar that bolts from the transmission to the right rear side of the engine. Do not know if AODs are set up for that bar. 351W 2v has 375 ft lbs of torque stock in 69. Also if you put headers on with an AOD you can not use long ones.

I have long tube headers.. with an AOD, its all about finding something that fits.. Mine are Hooker competition headers..

Grifter77: You need to pick up some mustang magazines. They really do help out. Get the free parts mags that you can get from the parts houses:
mustangs unlimited
National Parts depot
CJ Pony Parts

The parts mags. really help out, especially when looking for parts. Most questions you might have about parts can be answered by the magazine.

Smile Hooker Comp Long tube

I have read that the Hooker comp long tubes do not work with an AOD in a convertible, how ever coupes and fast backs do not have the reinforcement pans or center plate. I have the same headers and am sticking with a FMX trans on my 69 convertible. I had a 69 Grande 351w and changed distributor from points to magnetic field impulse, 2 1/2 inch dual exhaust and advanced timing 2 deg, my average mileage was 26.8 miles per gallon rear was 3:08 trac loc. am doing the same with this project.
