Default 68 mustang convt, I Need Help

Hello all. So ive beena chevy guy for the past 37 years. I have shifted to the blue oval world this past month. I purchssed a "restored' 68 convt mustang over the internet two weeks ago. I receieved a bondo filled msuatng instead (i am now trying to sue the crook that sold it as he is cold blooded lying criminal. Any how. The mustang is now at my body shop getting new 1/4s installed and the shelby tail end (i love the look) the car has a 302, four speed and nine inch rear. Disc brake but no power steering. The manual steering is rough and id like my wife to be able to drive the car. WHat is the recomended fix? If i keep the car i intedn to take it over the top with full suspension upgrades and motor work. Unfortunatly the extra 5k i have to put into the body is delaying the time frame for suspension work by four weeks. Any advice with the car would be appreciated.

may i add, not that money is no object (it is) but i like to build things right the first time (so dont be scared to spend my money). So whom has the best steering setup out there and what else should be replaced at the same time

Your basic choices are a) restore the steering to stock or b) install a rack and pinion unit. I went with a Unisteer rack and pinion unit which was somewhat bolt on with a bit of work with a grinder to make it fit and it cost o/a $800.

I've also heard that putting a roller bearing idler arm can help. No personal experience with it but have used other opentracker products and found them to deliver what's promised.

You can replace the manual with power steering conversion kit , or replace all the parts with rebuilt factory power steering, up grade your coils and shocks and sway bar to 1 inch or 1 1/8 in. Rack and pinion are nice to but modifying more than just metal, oil pan, headers, are just a few items you would have to modify.
