Depending on what wheels came stock on your Stang, you have either 8" or 8.5" wide wheels. If I recall, you can safely go 235's and 255's, respectively. Check the tire specs on tirerack.com for some comparison.

Biggest tire or widest?
I have 295/45/18 in the rear, but they're about 1" larger diameter than stock.
Fronts are stock diameter 255/40/18? not sure...
(no abs or trac control problems as some have said).

I think you have to go with a drag radial to go much wider than the 295/45/18 in the
rear...

To the OP, are you asking what size tires for a particular rim size or what overall is the largest size tire we could fit with a stock or lowered suspension?

the Mickey Thompson ET Streets are sized at 26x11.5x17 and they fit on the stock 17" rims.. i believe that is a 305 width? i guess you aer worried about height though.. i think you can get some really tall tires and be fine for the rears..

You can put a taller tire on those 18's to fill the wheel well but you may sacrifice some handling. You'll also need a tuner to reset the tire revs per mile. I know my 275/40/18's leave about 3" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender flare.
