Swap it out to anything you want, the 5.0L has the same bolt pattern as the 4.6L.

The 5R55 is the 5spd automatic in the gen 1 S-197's. The GT-500 trans is strong but not geared for N/A. JPC makes a nice kit with a full sized 6pd that can handle 750trq.

im a bit of a mechanics nub, is it possible to convert an auto to a 6speed when upgrading tranny or is that out of the question?

It has been done several times but it is fairly expensive and you would have to find someone that knows what they are doing to get it done. It's not something for the novice mechanic.

I hate that (less than)3% of the MT82's are problematic and THAT is causing such heartache. It is NOT made of glass!!! It's a perfectly FINE transmission. Some had/have issues. A majority of the issues are from abuse or uneducated diagnosis of problems. The issues HAVE been taken care of by FORD. (And a lot of those issues were NOT even the actual trans. They were the clutch and clutch peddle.) Jeez!

OP: Just KEEP your MT82 unless you have an issue....and even if you DO have an issue(unlikely), take it to FORD and have 'em diagnose the issue correctly. There is no need to fix something that isn't broken.

I agree with that too, if it aint broke don't fix it. I've tried the Steeda Tri-Ax shifter and alignment bushing and it seems to cure a lot of the problems, so does the CHE Kmember brace with torque limiters.
