Default Teflon on upper intake bolts?

Got everything back together after replacing leaky lower intake gaskets. While reading the factory service manual on torquing down the upper intake bolts I noticed that it says to add a dab of teflon sealant to the threads of the bolts. Huh?!?! Why? The bolts don't cross through any oil or coolant passages, as far as I can tell. And the bolt wholes bottom out in the lower intake. So what is the sealant supposed to seal? Am I missing something here? Thanks...

I would just slap some never-sieze on em and get to work. Just be careful, the torque specs are really low.

Are you sure you're not mixing up your teflon with your anti-sieze? I don't recall them calling for teflon on them.

Thats what I figured. Two different types of metals and all. I went dry, though, cause they were dry when I removed them. I'll redo each bolt individually and apply some anti-sieze to the threads. I also always use a torque wrench when the manual calls for it. :-) First tighten to 88 in/lbs, then 15 ft/lbs then 23 ft/lbs. I used Fel-Pro gaskets, so it should be re-usable. Especially since it looks like the upper intake gasket is some kind of plastic.

According to page 03-01A-15 of the '98 Mustang Factory Service Manual, it states "NOTE: Apply a light coat of Pipe Sealant with Teflon D8AZ-19554-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G350-A2 and ESR-M18P7-A to retaining bolts and stud bolt threads prior to installation."

Thanks for the replies.

btw, I just went back in dry too, never a problem after years of use.
Mine came without anything from the factory on the 95, 95 and 00.

Its not a bad idea though and thats why its there.
I dont know why they said as per Ford specs because Ford didnt use anything.
