Rare Ghia Junkyard Find Makes Us Yearn for the '80s

Believe it or not, this rare 1981 Fox Body would cost you nearly $20,000 today… sort of.

How’s this for a classic discovery?

Unfortunately, we can’t take credit for scrounging through the junkyard and finding this 1981 Mustang Ghia. But it certainly doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the vintage gem.

Because of all the special edition Fords badged during the pony car’s legendary history, the Ghia Mustang had a rather unique marque all to its own. Clearly, this particular car, first discovered by an AutoBlog reporter in the San Francisco Bay Area, has sustained a lot of wear and tear over the past 36 years.

Still, it’s pretty clear that at one point, the ’81 Mustang Ghia was quite the catch. For starters, the special-edition ‘Stang was equipped with Ford’s rare straight-six cylinder, one of a few engines offered for the Fox Body during the 15 years the third-gen Mustang was produced by Ford.

Some of the other notable features on this Ghia include cruise control, a double-stitched leather horn button, and a cassette tape deck. Then there’s the Mustang’s faux wood. Pure classic ‘80s, right? Even more interesting, the AutoBlog report suggests that the car’s cassette player, which was a $174 option back in 1981, would cost $466 today, if you calculated for inflation.

Back in the eighties, the total cost for the Mustang Ghia was listed at $6,858, which comes out to be about $19,142 today. Well, minus all that damage it’s sustained over the years.
