LS-powered Fox Body Mustang Crashes Into Wall at No Prep Drag Race
Fox Body Mustang unceremoniously smashes into a barrier. Fortunately, the driver emerged unscathed.
The internet deemed the Ford Mustang a menace to public safety long ago. Cheap horsepower prompts drivers to make poor decisions, after all. And given the popularity of the Ford, it’s no wonder why the car quickly became one of the most popular automotive internet memes. The most popular Mustang crashes tend to focus on the owners who lose control of their rides on public roads. But crashes happen at the track too.
That’s the focal point of a video recently posted to YouTube by blown64vette. The driver, Jason Taylor, crashed his Mustang while participating in the Scenic City No Prep Smackdown at Brainerd Motorsports Park. It’s never fun to witness these great cars eat wall, but the proliferation of “no prep” races means drivers like Taylor face a risky racing environment.
Dangers of No Prep Racing
This isn’t the first time Mustang Forums has discussed a crash at a no prep drag race. Another Fox Body met a similar fate several years ago at the Winter Meltdown No-Prep Shootout. Obviously, there’s always a risk of crashing with any type of race. But the risks are heightened if the track isn’t cleared beforehand. That hasn’t stopped no prep races from becoming official events though. According to the Hot Rod Network, no prep racing likely gained traction after the Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaws aired episodes that featured them. Regardless of where it originated, it seems no prep drag races are here to stay.
As for Taylor’s crash, it occurred pretty quickly after he launched. He struggles to keep the car straight before the Mustang takes a sharp left turn into the opposite wall. It’s unclear what exactly caused the Mustang to lose control, but that sunset is definitely distracting.
The end result is grisly. Every body panel in front of the windshield got smashed to bits. And the pit crew was forced to rip off all the remaining parts in order for the Mustang to get towed. There appears to be extensive frame damage. Although all is not lost. The Ford didn’t appear to be leaking any fluids after the crash. And Taylor successfully steered the Mustang onto the flatbed tow truck.
Blown64vette provided additional details in the video’s description. Taylor worked on the Mustang all year. He’s also a regular at Brainerd Motorsports Park. The Ford required a lot of tinkering because in addition to the LS swap, there’s a nitrous system too. He participated in the “Cash Days” racing event, which took place on Friday, Oct. 18. His competitor raced with a nitrous powered big-block Camaro. Most importantly, Taylor wasn’t injured in the crash. But the Mustang “will need some work.” That seems like an understatement.
Racing is an inherently risky endeavor. Fortunately, smart people take their cars to the track. That doesn’t mean there aren’t crashes though. And no prep drag races likely increase the chance of a vehicle heading straight for the wall. Fortunately, it appears this particular Fox Body wasn’t destroyed. Ford isn’t making new ones anymore, so it’s never fun to hear about their demise. We wish Taylor well and hope he finds the restoration of his Mustang as stress free as possible.
